BROKEN JAW and YOUNG BEAR

Young Bear moved forward with determination as he approached the food source and Broken Jaw, but once he was close, he became very cautious of Broken Jaw. The landfill was carved into a crater shape, giving Young Bear places to hide while he watched Broken Jaw’s movements. He periodically poked his head up to check to see what Broken Jaw was doing. Broken Jaw appeared to be concentrating on eating. The landfill attendant said that, even though injured, he retained his status as alpha, or top bear.

I used photo reference and my memories of the day to produce these two pieces. The day was dim and rainy with the sun appearing occasionally. The sun came out when Young Bear was poking his head up and the light changed, brightening areas of the landfill and making it feel like a world of its own.

Once again, I depicted Broken Jaw looking large, rough and dirty. This piece clearly shows his hanging jaw.
